Here Are Your New Canadian Youth Climbing National Champions
Last night, the 2022-2023 Canadian Youth National Championships officially came to a close with an exciting lead finals event in Calgary, Alberta. The event ran from Thursday May 18 to Tuesday May 23 and saw Canada’s top youth climbers competing in bouldering and lead climbing across three age categories: Junior (born in 2004 or 2005), Youth A (born in 2006 or 2007) and Youth B (born in 2008 or 2009). The event was run by Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC), the national governing body for competition climbing in Canada, as recognized by the Canadian Olympic Committee and International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC).
The boulder comp was held at Calgary Climbing Centre’s Chinook location while the lead comp took place at the gym’s Rocky Mountain facility. It was an action-packed week for the young climbers, especially those competing in both boulder and lead:
Thursday – Boulder qualifiers
Friday – Boulder semi-finals
Saturday – Boulder finals
Sunday – Rest day
Monday – Lead qualifiers
Tuesday – Lead semi-finals and finals
A few athletes had stand-out performances. Alberta’s Evan Lau was crowned double champ in Youth A , winning both boulder and lead. Sienna Chow of BC earned double champ status for the Youth B division. Junior category’s Matthew Rodriquez also had a great showing, winning gold in lead and silver in boulder.
A full list of final results in both boulder and lead for Junior, Youth A, and Youth B categories can be found below. You can also rewatch livestreams of the events here.
